info Hip-hop? Noise? Jazz? Improvising? Rock’n’roll? Minimalism? Sound Art? Punk? The current program by Mopcut together with avant-rap pioneer MC Dälek is a genre-dissolving manifesto that stealthily creeps through the experimental scene, absorbing its innovations and spitting out excessive conceptual ballast. Their latest collaborative album RYOK, featuring Philadelphia activist and poet Moor Mother and acclaimed turntablist and composer Mariam Rezaei, flows between different currents and constantly transforms itself. Mopcut is an international trio formed by experimental vocalist and electronic musician Audrey Chen, one of Europe’s most respected percussionists Lukas Koenig, and French guitar eccentric Julien Desprez. Their improvisational abilities transcend any genre limitations. Their energetic, furious compositions oscillate between unrestrained expression and controlled, compact noise, structured around ecstatic micro-explosions resembling an imaginary form of communication. Will Brooks aka MC Dälek is a loud sonic monster relentlessly forcing its way forward. A maximal, often physical experience, an intense clash with waves of noise and restless commentary. Dissonant sounds engage in endless battles with hard beats. Strict hip-hop versus psychedelic frenzy. “Dälek makes hip-hop for people who hate hip-hop,” claims one review. “What is certain is that at its core lies the hardest, most primal hip-hop,” says another. The wildly creative and politically charged third album RYOK merges free improvisation, hip-hop, noise, post-punk and electronics into powerful new forms. LINE-UP
