info The Prague-based trio Jungle Debris — featuring tenor saxophonist Martin Debřička, bassist Luan Gonçalves, and drummer Jakub Švejnar — first emerged in 2019, united by their jazz studies at HAMU. In June 2025, they released their self-titled debut album on the progressive label Ma Records, delivering a genre-blending work full of bold compositional ideas and daring improvisation. Led by Debřička, the group navigates fluidly between minimalist textures, experimental soundscapes, tight grooves, and explosive free jazz. The opening track Mango begins with a detached sax line over a steady pulse, evolving into a dynamic piece with shifting moods and virtuosic interplay. Gonçalves impresses with his expressive bowing, while Švejnar’s drumming blends control and raw energy. Guest musicians add further color. Guitarist Jan Bára appears on Last Yew, which transforms from drone meditation into a loose collective jam. Pianist Jan Pudlák shines on both Rhodes and acoustic piano—his presence on Děcka, ticho! brings a quirky Zorn-like vibe, while Velrybí klec explores darker, more introspective terrain. The ferocious Gdáck features alto saxophonist Michal Wróblewski and echoes the raw power of 1960s free jazz icons. Surprises continue to the end: Gonçalves contributes ecstatic vocals on 1511, and the closing track I’vory builds into a dramatic, unresolved finale—leaving the listener with a sense of an ongoing creative process. Jungle Debris is a vital voice in the new jazz landscape: uncompromising, inventive, and deeply engaging.
